For some reason, I can’t comment on your Zidane post, with which I had a minor quibble: Zidane, from my understanding, never won a French title.
Moacir, my wireless dialup in India sometimes doesn’t allow me to do one final fact checking and my impression that Zidane won the French championship with Bordeaux seems to be mistaken. At Bordeaux, Zidane played in UEFA cup finals in 1996.
Totally fine with me. It hadn’t dawned on me until you put it that way–that he’d won everything possible. I didn’t think that was humanly possible. Still, of all his achievements, I think a French title would’ve been toward the bottom anyway, given that it’d have been the weakest achievement he’d made. Though it might have also have been his first, so who knows.
I hate the French team for sending Brazil to the showers in ‘98, and I especially hated Zidane (this was helped by the Ronaldinho or Zidane? debates). But going into Sunday’s match, I felt I had to cheer for les bleus. Not only had Zidane warmed on me (and totally won me over with the headbutt, to be honest), but Italy had played so cynically that I wanted to see them sent home to whine away as their agents called MLS teams to arrange monster transfers as the Serie A falls apart.
I hated this World Cup–pretty much all I could get excited about was the Socceroos, perhaps, and Ukraine, to a degree. Brazil let me down huge, and the rest… the rest was just Euro 2006.
A nice comment on why Zidane lost his cool?…
