Yesterday and today, it is the Spare the Air day in the Bay area. All the public transportation services - BART, MUNI etc - were all free for riders. During summer months, when the air quality is deemed to be unhealthy, the local Bay Area Air Management District advises people to use public transportation.
On Spare the Air Days, we ask Bay Area residents to fight pollution by driving less, taking public transportation, trip-linking, walking, biking, choosing not to use gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment, and avoiding polluting household products. People who are especially sensitive to pollution are advised to limit their time outdoors, particularly in the afternoon hours.
Spare the Air program and the promoting public transportation made me think of the salutary effect similar programs would have on our Indian cities, especially Delhi during summers.
Any takers for a campaign along these lines? Free Metra rides in Delhi, to get the babus and politicians out of their AC cars?
