Prachi, Anantamurthy infact proposed the measure. I had a quick chat with him this evening on this topic. As I wrote, I am invested in the name change but I am also want us to acknowledge the way we use language isn't an innocent process. granted, we take recourse to St. Michel at the drop of a hat but let us in this case actually acknowledge power that English (and English speaking people too)weilds.

I'm surprised (and disappointed)that it was Ananthamurthy who supported the name-change. There's no hope from politicians, but shouldn't he know better?

DP, We could discuss why and how Texas (Mexico and Bengalaru too) was spelt/pronounced differently a different points in time. Your point is well taken, but how we use language isn't an innocent process. It is too early in the day to offer my theory of power and how the usage of the 'victor' becomes the standard practice. Honestly, I am not outraged if Bangalore is used and I even understand why phonetically Bangalore makes sense for English the same way CHIKAGO does in Kannada. But the hysteria produced this and other kannada related controversies make me laugh and what i wrote was an attept to bring some humor into these discussions.

Lets take a simple look at Texas: it was originally a part of Mexico. During that period before its independence and accession to the US, it was called Te'jas (the "'j" being pronounced as "h" as in: ತೆಹಾಸ್) Its now called Texas ("x" pronounced as "eks"). But in the highly unlikely event of it being annexed by Mexico again, do you think Texas will become Te'jas again?

Consider Mexico itself: Locally in Mexican Spanish, its referred to as Me'jico (as in: ಮೆಹಿಕೊ) but the internationally known name, and accepted by the Mexican government is Mexico ("x" being pronounced as "eks"). Do you think Mexico ought to become Me'jico to the whole world?

The Bangalore to Bengaluru argument is the same. When I talk in Kannada I refer to the city as Bengaluru but when someone asks me the same in English, I'll say Bangalore :-)
