I will have to do a little bit of research to do a genealogy of 'Carnatic' and that will be an interesting project to undertake, after I complete a couple of other pressing commitments. I promise to do a posting on this around the 20th of this month.

Thanks for the reply. was actually wondering how karnaTaka shAstreeya saMgeeta had anything to do with Carnatic. Was not aware of the trinity of 'Carnatic' or shld I say karnaTaka shAstreeya saMgeeta hailing from this region. Always thought that it was a corrupted version of karnataka music -- which originates through Sri Purandaradasa.

Am wondering, how and why did Arcot get the name of Carnatic. Remember having studied abt the 3 Carnatic wars, but have never read any mention of why Arcot was Carnatic. swalpa torch haaki, if u know :)

Arun, I am not referring to Kannada usage here. Carnatic indeed is the anglicized version and this term came to be used with the advent of the East India Company in the 18th century. Karnataka, of course, refers to the land of black soil, and indeed is the name for Kannada speaking region. And it ought to be Karnataka Shastriya Sangeeta, at least for us Kannadigas. But the term 'Carnatic' (with this particular spelling) was used primarily by the EI Company to refer to the region around Arcot, which was in the first half of the 18th century one of the three major political powers of South India. Well, the trinity of Carnatic music comes from this region, which is why the term too is used. But we surely don't have to continue this usage and I am actually on A NA KR's party here.

Hi,

I refer to your comment above that Carnatic music -- the word carnatic refers to the region around Arcot. This is not true. Carnatic is a Anglicized version. kannaDadalli eegalU naavu karnaTaka shaastreeya saMgeeta eMdE hELOdu. I don't think Carnatic has anything to do with Arcot :)

Karthik, I am not an expert on the history of Carnatic (interestingly the term itself refers to the region around Arcot and primarily used from the 18th century onwards) music and sure, Purandara Dasa is widely regarded as the father (pitamaha) of Carnatic music. While his keerthanas are widely sung by all in the second half of the 20th century, what A. N. Krishnarao, the novelist, actually points out both in the novel and eslewhere has to do with how Kannada songs had been ignored by Carnatic singers. This is consequence of the rise of the trinity of Carnatic music - Thyagaraja, Muthuswami Dikshitar and Syama Sastri. well, my intention here is not to be a Kannada chauvanist but to point out a historical fact (?) and suggest that there has been a concerted move to bring Keerthanas back into vogue. Perhaps, they hadn't completely gone out of circulation but in the 19th and 20th century, it appears as though Kannada songs were not part of the Carnatic music canon.

Hi,

When you say that Kannada was not used until recently in classical music aren't you ignoring that Carnatic music itself was systematized in Kannada by Purandara Dasa? Though not as often as these days, carnatic singers from Tamil Nadu and Andhra have always tried to include Kannada devara namas in their concerts. Earlier they used to mispronounce Kannada words regularly but the younger generation is taking pains to pronounce words properly.

Regards,
Karthik
